In 1991, Ronald McDonald House Sydney opened its doors with one simple promise: no family should face childhood illness alone.
Thirty five years later, that promise remains at the heart of everything we do.
As I reflect on this milestone, I am filled with gratitude for the people who have made it possible. Families, volunteers, staff, donors and partners have each played a part in building something extraordinary. It is a privilege to lead an organisation with such a rich history and an even brighter future.
Over the past 35 years, we have grown from one House into a network of services supporting families in more ways than our founders could have imagined. Our programs have expanded, our partnerships have strengthened and our understanding of what families need has deepened with every year.
Yet the heart of Ronald McDonald House Sydney has never changed.
Our purpose has always been simple: keeping families together
and close to the care their child needs.
That purpose comes to life in the everyday moments that often go unseen. It is the volunteer preparing a home cooked meal after finishing their own day’s work. It is the donor whose generosity means a family has somewhere safe to stay. It is the staff member sitting beside a parent in the early hours of the morning because that is exactly where they need to be.
None of these moments make headlines. Together, they are the reason Ronald McDonald House Sydney has been a place of comfort, hope and belonging for thousands of families over the past 35 years.
When I think about what I am most proud of, it is not the milestones or the numbers, although they tell an important story.
It is the families who arrived during one of the hardest moments of their lives and found not just a place to stay, but a community ready to support them. It is knowing that when a family walks through our doors, they are welcomed with warmth, compassion and the reassurance that they do not have to face their journey alone.
This anniversary belongs to the generations of staff, volunteers, donors, partners and supporters who have carried our mission forward long before I became part of the story. I am incredibly proud to stand alongside them and deeply grateful for everything they have made possible.
Healthcare will continue to evolve, and so will the needs of the families we support.
Our responsibility is to evolve with them by strengthening our services, investing in our facilities, embracing innovation where it enhances family support and building even stronger partnerships across our community. Thirty five years ago, our aspiration was that no family should ever feel alone while their child received medical care.
Today, that aspiration remains exactly the same. What has changed is our ability to reach more families, provide more support and make an even greater difference. That is what excites me most about the future.
